Drawer Box Size & Slide Clearance Calculator
Determine exact drawer box exterior dimensions and height deductions for undermount, side-mount ball bearing, and epoxy slides. Input your cabinet carcass opening and hardware brand (Blum, Accuride, Knape & Vogt) to calculate target drawer width, depth, and bottom panel groove recesses.
How Much Clearance Do Drawer Slides Require?
Drawer slide clearance depends entirely on the hardware type. Standard side-mount ball-bearing slides (like Accuride) require exactly 1/2″ of clearance on both left and right sides (1.0″ total deduction). In contrast, concealed undermount slides (like Blum Tandem) require precision box sizing with only a 3/16″ total width deduction, specific bottom panel thickness limits, and precise rear locking pin boring depths.

How to Build and Install Custom Drawer Boxes
Follow these four fabrication steps to assemble square drawer boxes and mount hardware without binding:
Select Slide Model Before Cutting Wood
Never cut drawer box stock before purchasing your slides. Undermount slides require specific maximum side thicknesses (typically 1/2″ or 5/8″) and precise rear boring holes, whereas side-mount ball-bearing slides tolerate minor thickness variations.
Cut and Groove Box Panels for the Bottom
Cut front, back, and side panels to calculated dimensions. Route a 1/4″ wide by 1/4″ deep dado groove into all four inner lower edges to capture the 1/4″ plywood bottom panel before gluing.
Square the Box Across Diagonals During Glue-Up
Glue and clamp the drawer box using dovetails, box joints, or pocket screws. Measure corner-to-corner diagonals; adjust clamp pressure until both diagonal measurements match within 1/32″ to ensure the box slides smoothly without binding.
Bore Rear Undermount Pins or Mount Side Slides
For undermount slides, bore the 6mm pin holes into the rear back panel. For side-mount slides, separate the cabinet member from the drawer member and screw them into level reference layout lines inside the carcass.
Comparing Side-Mount, Undermount, and Epoxy Slide Systems
Selecting the correct drawer slide type determines both interior drawer storage width and overall cabinet luxury. Each hardware category requires distinct box dimensions and machining steps.
Side-Mount Ball Bearing
The workshop workhorse. They require exactly 1/2″ clearance per side, support 100+ lbs, offer full extension travel, and are exceptionally forgiving if drawer box widths vary by 1/16″.
Concealed Undermount
Hidden beneath the drawer box for a clean, luxury appearance. They feature soft-close dampening and require strict width and depth tolerances, plus specific bottom-recess machining.
Epoxy Euro Slides
Affordable, self-closing white or brown slides commonly used in production cabinetry. They require 1/2″ side clearance per side and provide smooth, reliable three-quarter or full-extension travel.
